New Kerbside Recycling Crate Service in the Mid North

New Kerbside Recycling Crate Service in the Mid North

Kerikeri and Mid North residents will have access to a convenient new recycling service!

Kerikeri and Mid North residents will soon have access to a convenient new recycling service — thanks to a local initiative from Northland Waste aimed at reducing waste and ensuring continued access to kerbside recycling. Designed with both community and convenience in mind, the service offers households the opportunity to continue recycling easily and affordably.

As a locally owned and operated company, Northland Waste has introduced the service to ensure the community wasn’t left without a practical recycling option following the withdrawal of recycling tags and bags in the district. The new service is not council-funded or part of any contracted service— it’s a voluntary initiative driven by local need.

“When we heard the previous service was coming to an end, we knew it was important someone stepped in,” says Andrew Sclater of Northland Waste. “We’ve always worked hard to support the communities we’re part of and this felt like the right thing to do. It’s not a council requirement, and there’s no external funding — we simply wanted to ensure people still had a way to recycle.”

Launching a new kerbside recycling service with limited lead time has been a significant undertaking, but Northland Waste says its team has worked hard behind the scenes to ensure the rollout is as smooth and seamless as possible.

“Affordability was a big focus for us,” Sclater adds. “We’ve worked hard to keep the cost down, with weekly crate collections starting from just $1.75 per week. Whether it’s a family looking to reduce their household waste or a single resident wanting to do their bit, we’ve  made it easy to get started.”

Signing up is simple. Residents can subscribe to the service online and activate their existing crate for collection. “We’re all about reducing, reusing, and recycling,” says Sclater. “So if you already have a crate in use, we can repurpose it for your new service. It can get a fresh new glow”. The new service offers flexible payment options — from annual payments to monthly direct debit — to suit a range of household budgets.

“We’re not doing this for headlines, we’re doing it because it matters and we want to support local,” says Sclater. “If everyone does their bit, together we can make a real difference.”

Using Northland Waste’s new weekly crate recycling service is as easy as activating your service through their website and placing your crate at the kerb on your Northland Waste collection day.

What You Can Recycle in the new service:

♻️ Glass bottles and jars
♻️ Clean tins and cans (aluminium and steel)
♻️ Plastic containers (#1 clear only, #2, and #5) — with lids, pumps, and triggers removed
♻️ Paper and cardboard — including newspapers, cereal boxes, and office paper (with food residue removed)

  • All collected recyclables are sent to recognised sorting facilities, helping ensure they are properly processed and reused — rather than ending up in landfill.

How to Sign Up

Getting started is easy. Head to our Mid North Recycling page, enter your address and choose the payment option that suits you best — either monthly direct debit, 6 monthly or annual payments available — and the team will take care of the rest.
