Gas to Energy

Powering Northland from Puwera Landfill

Did you know we capture and destroy 90% of Puwera Landfill’s gas?

Since the opening of our facility, the landfill has been designed and built with a series of gas collection pipes and wells. The system draws gas to a central point where it can be processed and treated.

Landfill gas is a natural by-product of the decomposition of organic material in landfills. Landfill gas contains a mix of methane and carbon dioxide. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is harmful to the environment.

Our Big Blue Flare

We installed ‘Big Blue’, our impressive Northland Blue designed flare, which captures methane and ‘vaporised’ the harmful gas at high temperatures.

We are continuously looking to the future and will be implementing a ‘gas to energy’ power station on site within the coming year, so watch this space for progress updates. This will allow us to use our landfill gas as an alternative energy source to power homes in Northland.

This process reduces the amount of methane released into the atmosphere, helping to reduce our contribution to global warming. We are proud to be leading the way in landfill gas management and are committed to reducing our environmental impact.
