Designed to be among the best in the world
Northland Regional Landfill, located 8km south of Whangarei, is a class one modern landfill designed to the highest level of engineering and environmental best practice. Our landfill, a joint venture partnership with Whangarei District Council, opened in 2009 and provides the district with critical waste management infrastructure. We remain New Zealand’s newest consented landfill, adhering to strict environmental designs and controls.
Disposal to landfill is often an option of last resort for materials for which there is not a technically or financially viable recovery solution. We support this stance and are conscious of ensuring options higher in the waste hierarchy for our customers as a first step.
At our regional facility, we are licensed to handle and dispose of a variety of waste types, including:
- General Waste
- Contaminated Soils
- Regulated and Hazardous Waste
If you have bulk waste disposal needs, let our experienced Landfill Services team take the hassle out of the process. Our team can provide technical advice, pricing, and waste acceptance options to ensure your needs are met quickly and efficiently. We are dedicated to providing reliable, safe and efficient Landfilling services, so contact us today for more information.
Protecting the Puwera Environment
Monitoring & Reporting
A rigorous monitoring and reporting regime is required, along with stringent operational controls. Monitoring of accepted waste materials is required, as is the monitoring of sediment runoff, surface water and groundwater quality, leachate quality and quantity, and landfill gas.
Leachate Management
Environmentally, Puwera Landfill is completely sealed to reduce contamination of the nearby groundwater. First, the ground is lined with clay. A thin layer of flexible plastic is placed on top of the clay layer. The leachate is collected through a drainage system that passes this contaminated water through pipes to a pool. This allows the collection of leachates, the liquid that passes through the landfill, for appropriate treatment to remove contaminants.
A layered liner system
A layered liner system with multiple redundancies to ensure the capture of landfill leachate. This stops leachate from seeping into the ground. The liner also channels the leachate to a collection point before being treated.
