In line with our commitment to supporting local communities, Northland Waste is proud to announce our latest quarterly donation of NZ$2,000 to the Kawau Rescue Coastguard. This vital organisation plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of our seas, averaging around 100 callouts per year with a dedicated team of about 25 trained volunteers. This year has been particularly busy with around 40 callouts in December 2023 and January 2024, due to the good weather. You can follow their callouts on Facebook.
Located at Sandspit outside Warkworth, the Kawau Volunteer Coastguard covers a vast area, extending from Bream Tail in the north to south of the Mahurangi River, and up to 12 nautical miles beyond Great Barrier Island and the Mokohinau Islands. The importance of their work cannot be overstated, as they operate 24/7 in challenging conditions to save lives at sea. If you are interested in donating to Kawau Coastguard, or joining as a crew member, then email Paul.steinkamp@coastguard.nz. If you are fit and live within 20 minutes of Sandspit, you may be eligible, and they will provide all your training.
As part of their ongoing efforts, Kawau Coastguard is planning to upgrade their rescue boat in 2025/26. This new vessel, estimated to cost between NZ$1.5-2 million, will aim for enhanced reliability, seakeeping, and improved facilities for patient management. While Coastguard New Zealand will contribute towards the cost, additional fundraising is essential to reach the target of NZ$1,500,000.
Northland Waste's contribution is a testament to our dedication to the welfare and safety of our communities. We recognise the significant impact and tireless efforts of the Kawau Rescue Coastguard and are honoured to support them in their mission.
We believe in giving back to the communities we serve and hope our support will help the Kawau Rescue Coastguard continue their invaluable work. We also encourage others to join us in this cause, as every contribution makes a difference in bolstering the safety and well-being of our coastal community.
