Oakura’s local heroes
Oakura’s local heroes
While Oakura has been dealing with flooding, two of our own, Trish and her son Nare, have been right at the heart of the response.
As operators at the Oakura Transfer Station, they’ve kept the site open, helped manage free flood disposal provided by Whangarei District Council, and coordinated the hook bins being used to clear damaged material from around the community.
They’ve even delayed clearing their own flood-damaged homes so they could keep helping others, and after being evacuated yesterday, they’ve chosen to stay close to the station so they can be back helping again the next day.
Since Monday, more than 10 tonnes of flood-damaged material had already been removed from Oakura. Thanks to their dedication and the wider team working through tough conditions.
If you heard Trish on RNZ, you’ll know how deeply she cares about this community. We couldn’t be prouder.
